Entrepreneur and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs has worked with thousands of immigrant families as they have navigated the American education system. Today, she’s thrown herself into the arts as a way of highlighting the value and plight of immigrants coming to America, including the recent image of a child peering over the border wall to Mexico. “It’s a beautiful idea to think that no matter where you are born on the planet, if you agree with our form of government… [you can choose] to actually come here,” she said in a conversation with Smithsonian Secretary David J. Skorton. “Those who are attracted to it, those who choose to be here, are the Americans.”
